Rouse runs past Mustangs, 42-28October 12, 2012, 11:50 pm by Mark Goodson
By Mark Goodson Highlander Sports Editor LEANDER – Leander Rouse quarterback Justin Pelt and running back Billy Ray McCrary ran the zone read all night with plenty of effectiveness against the Marble Falls Mustangs. The pair led the Rouse Raiders to a 42-28 victory over the Mustangs at Bible Stadium in Leander. Pelt scored on a pair of short runs in the fourth quarter to seal the win. He scored from nine yards out early in the fourth quarter to cap an 80-yard drive and then tacked on a sneak from one yard with fourth-and-one with 4:32 left to put the Raiders ahead, 42-28. Marble Falls had a chance to seize the momentum in the fourth quarter when the Mustangs forced a fumble on a play inside the Marble Falls 10 to stop a drive with the score 35-28. On the next play quarterback Mike Richardson, who had a solid night running the football to complement his passing, took off on a run to his left. The ball bounced loose and Rouse recovered at the Marble Falls 14. The Mustangs hung in after Pelt put the Raiders in a first-and-goal from the three after a gain of 11 yards. It took four plays to cover the three yards as Marble Falls dug in. The Mustangs were unable to hold Pelt out on fourth down. Marble Falls Richardson hooked up for two touchdown passes to Garrett Gray in the first half in a game that had the Mustangs battling back from deficits all night. Marble Falls fell behind 14-0, but Gray scored on passes of 36 and 47 yards and Richardson added a 26-yard sprint for the other score. In the third quarter, Marble Falls put together a 10-play, 59-yard march on its first possession after halftime and scored on a nine-yard pass from Richardson to Aidin Parnell. Marble Falls drops its record to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in District 25-4A. Rouse improved to 5-2 and 2-1. Cedar Park, Leander, Rouse and Vista Ridge are holding down the top four spots in the district.
