Mary Helen Culp Oct. 1, 1929 ~ Dec. 18, 2012
Mary Helen Culp, 83, of Austin, passed away in Marble Falls on Dec. 18. Culp was born on Oct. 1, 1929 in El Paso to B.D. and Juel Watkins.
She graduated from Austin High School in 1947 and married James Doc Culp. They had five daughters and together were the proprietors of Culp’s Super Foodlands, First Prize Meat Markets, and a Texas Gold Stamps redemption center. Culp was ahead of her time in the 1940s and 50s as she managed to work full time and care for five children. After selling the stores, she went on to get her real estate license and in her semi-retirement was a house mother for a fraternity and sorority at the University of Texas. Culp moved to Marble Falls in 2005 to be near her children and grandchildren. Not one to be idle, she volunteered as treasurer for the Marble Falls Senior Center.
She loved her children and grandchildren more than anything in the world. She loved traveling and took her kids and grandkids on many trips for which they now have a lifetime to treasure. She will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched.
Culp was preceded in death by her parents; brothers B.D. Watkins, Jr., A.J. Watkins, and Durwood Watkins; and daughter Sharon Barber.
She is survived by Karen Hardy of Austin; Shery Pullin and husband, Robert, of Burnet; Debbi Culp-Hook and husband John, of Laguna Vista, Texas; Cynthia Culp of Lago Vista, Texas; 9 grandchildren; and many great and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 22 at the Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, followed by funeral services at 10 a.m. Interment will follow
at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
Honored as pallbearers were Robert Pullin, Don Kuempel, Scott Pullin, Brian Pullin, James Ford Harris, Jr., and William Austen Harris.
