Bertram hires new police chief

Tracy Weems, a University of Texas at Austin police officer, was appointed Bertram’s new police chief Tuesday night after emerging as a finalist from a pool of 34 applicants. Mayor Dickie Allen wanted council members involved in the final hiring decision during their Jan. 22 regular meeting.
Weems will leave his Austin post and begin his first day as Bertram’s police chief Feb. 1.
City leaders met earlier that day with the top three candidates for the job, interviewing each and wanting them to get a feel for the city. Weems and two other candidates attended the evening council meeting where city leaders and residents were allowed to ask them questions in order to make a final selection. After a brief executive session, the council emerged and announced Weems as the new chief.
