Elsie Jo Spillers Newton was born Sept. 8, 1924 in a farm house in the Hoover Valley Community in Burnet County, to Rex A. Spillers and Tillie Frances Lynn Spillers. Newton, along with her sister Winnie and other siblings Dora, Chuck, and Bill, was raised by their devoted and hardworking mother. She attended all grades of school in Burnet and was a proud graduate of Burnet High School class of 1942.
Following graduation she began working for the City of Burnet with offices located in the Burnet County Courthouse. She worked in the utility billing department and later moved to the new city offices on the square and worked for the City Secretary.
In 1946, she was reintroduced to Douglas Newton, also a Burnet native. After dating several months they married Sept. 12, 1946. From that moment on it was always, "Doug and Jo” ...a loving and devoted couple. They were married over 60 years until Doug’s death in 2006. Following the birth of their first child, Newton didn’t return to work for the city, instead she devoted herself full time to her home and family.
From 1962 to 1985 however, Newton was secretary, bookkeeper, accountant, payroll officer, and HR specialist for Newton Service Center, her husband’s local business. Of course she was never paid and worked from her kitchen table!
Newton became a Christian at the Burnet Church of Christ and faithfully attended the church. In 1972 she joined the First Baptist Church of Burnet so all her family could worship together. She was active in all areas of church life at First Baptist. She taught yearly in VBS as well as leading young girls in missions’ education in GA’s.
As a mom, Newton was always supportive of her children in their school activities. She was room mother, PTA member, and Booster Club parent. She was known as a kind, compassionate, and gracious woman who lived to serve and constantly worry over all of her family.
