Mary E. Nolen May 31, 1928 ~ Jan. 29, 2013

January 18, 2013, 9:07 am by Staff Reports

Mary E. Nolen, 84, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29 in Houston.
Nolen was born and raised in Burnet, where she graduated from high school. While living in Burnet, her father was involved in several business endeavors: running a grocery store, automobile garage and the icehouse. Her mother was busy as a homemaker for Nolen, and her two brothers and two sisters.
She met her husband, Glen Nolen, on a double date. Her girlfriend had asked her to join Glen and his brother for a night on the big town. Glen was home visiting his parents in a neighboring town, while on leave from the Navy. After a short courtship they were married. Their first year of marriage was spent in Washington DC.
Later, they moved to the Houston area where Glen worked for Phillips Petroleum for more than 30 years. They raised three boys together; Gary, Shane, and Craig. After retiring, they moved back to the country to the village of Buchanan Dam. Married for 60 years, Glen and Mary enjoyed several
years in the country before Glen passed away. In 2007 Mary made the decision to move back to Houston to be close to all three of her sons, who live there. She resided with the oldest son, Gary and his family. She was also proud of her five wonderful grandchildren.
Nolen described herself as a very shy and conservative individual.
We knew her to be much more: pleasant, appreciative, classy, and a genuine delight to be around, with a terrific sense of humor. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading and, of course, spending time with her dog Amber.
Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 in the Chapel of Levy Funeral Directors. Interment will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3 at South Park Cemetery in Pearland.
