Free golf plan to be discussed today at Burnet City Council workshop

The Burnet City Council was scheduled to meet today in an attempt to diffuse a a controversy that has recently bubbled up around a proposed plan to award themselves lifetime free memberships at the city-owned Delaware Springs Golf Course.
The meeting was scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Burnet Community Center, 401 E. Jackson St.
The council unanimously approved the first reading of a proposed city ordinance amendment that would entitle anyone who served a full term on the council to the free golf membership at their March 5 meeting.
Since that first reading, a number of citizens have criticized the plan and council member Ken Graham, who had originally proposed the ordinance amendment, asked that the second reading and a possible vote on it be taken off the agenda for the most recent meeting March 26.
Council member Buddy Coker, who asked that today’s workshop be scheduled, said he hopes the meeting will clear up some misconceptions and what he termed false information about the council’s actions and its intentions.
"I think it will answer a lot of questions,” Coker said in an interview Tuesday.
"First of all, there is no free golf,” Coker said. "It’s discounted golf, not free golf.
"I think that needs to be clarified after some people got up at the last minute and grandstanded for political reasons.”
