Balloons abound: hot air balloon festival at Horseshoe Bay Resort
April 19, 2013, 4:35 pm by Alexandria Randolph
Music, balloons and spirited festivity will fill the air at the three-day Balloons Over Horseshoe Bay Resort hot air balloon festival on April 19 to 21 at the Resort Jet Center.
The festival will showcase over 20 hot air balloons, including the special character balloons; Humpty Dumpty piloted by Rich Lawhor of St. Louis, Miss., Buzzy the Bee, piloted by Gary Sines of Jefferson City, Miss. and CoCo the Clown, piloted by Jan Sines of Jefferson City, Miss.
"There will be 20 hot air balloons from all over the country,” said Bryan Woodward, Chief Marketing Officer for the resort. "The special shaped balloons are always the most popular.”
A complete list of the participating balloons and their pilots can be found on the resort website.
Woodward said that Horseshoe Bay has never experienced the festival.
"I’ve done this in different parts of the country, but it will be really exciting for this region,” Woodward said. "We’ll have a whole lot of fun things going on.”
The event will kick-off Friday afternoon with a VIP evening for hotel guests and resort members including tethered balloon rides, wine tasting, and a vendor and craft fair. On Saturday the event will open to the general public with the balloon ascension at 6:30 a.m.
"The balloons will be going up on Saturday morning at sunrise,” Woodward said. "The gates will open at 5 a.m.”
The powered parachute demonstration will begin at 8 a.m., and helicopter rides will begin at 10 a.m. A special portion of the event on Saturday will be a dog walk benefit at the Marriott Event Lawn at 10:30 a.m.
Woodward said the one mile walk benefits the Highland Lakes SPCA and Heart of Texas Lab Rescue.
"The big part of the event is in the evening,” Woodward said. "We’ll have sky divers and a balloon glow. All the pilots will line up and ignite their propane at the same time and illuminate their balloons in the darkness. It’s going to be a magical time.”
Saturday evening will also feature a live music performance by Sixpence None the Richer, a Grammy-nominated group whose big hit, "Kiss Me,” topped the charts in the late 90s.
Sunday’s activities include private balloon rides beginning at 7 a.m. and a gospel brunch at the Resort Jet Center at 9 a.m.
General admission tickets are $15, and VIP packages for hotel guests and resort members were still available as of press time. The package includes room, admission to the festival, including Friday night’s VIP Sponsor Party with Hill Country barbecue and tethered balloon rides. Tickets can be booked online at the resort website at www.hsbresort.com or by calling 877. 258.4512. Registration for the dog walk benefit can be made by calling 830.598.5712. and is $10.
