The Burnet Bulldogs picked-up a win in their 2013 season opener on Friday night in Fredericksburg, 40-27. The Dawg’s first score came with 5:16 left in the opening period on a Derek Kiser to Brock Foster 34-yard connection. Austin Huff tacked on the extra point to make it 7-0. Fredericksburg answered in just three plays and quickly tied the game at 7-7. Burnet’s next possession lasted 10-plays and took the remainder of the first quarter time off the clock. An 18-yard Kiser to Blayne Parisher touchdown broke the tie and put the Dawgs up 13-7.
The Bulldogs added two more scores before the break. The first was another connection between Kiser and Foster, this one from 7-yards out. The second was 31-yard Kiser to Parisher touchdown pass and catch that put team green in the lead 27-7 with 6:20 left in the second.
The Billies used that time to inch a little closer with a score of their own and at the break it was 27-13. Fredericksburg cashed in a 29-yard reception for a score on their second possession of the third quarter which cut Burnet’s lead to seven at 27-20.
Trenton Hafley produced several great runs on the Dawgs ensuing drive and eventually added his first score of the night on a 17-yard run. The touchdown put Burnet back in control at 33-20 which was the score at the end of the third quarter.
The Billies used a 14-yard pass with 10 minutes left in the fourth to cut Burnet’s lead to six at 33-27. With 2:18 left in the game Burnet was forced to punt the ball away. The Billies worked their way downfield and had a first and 10 at their own 42 with 1:44 left in the game. Fredericksburg’s QB dropped back for the pass which bounced off the receivers fingers due in part to a nice well-timed stick by Kody Hall, and Eve Medrano was there for the interception giving Burnet possession with 1:24 left in the game.
On third and seven from the Fredericksburg 29 Kiser faked the hand-off to Hafley and sailed his way to the end zone. Flags flew and the play was nullified. After a delay of game and a short run on third down the Dawgs were facing a fourth and 9 from the 31 with 26-seconds on the clock.
Kiser hit Cody Jones near the Bulldog sidelines and with just 17-seconds to play Jones added the final score of the game making it 40-27.
