Dawgs win season opener

The skies across Texas lit-up Friday night as most Lone Star teams suited up for some grid iron action.
High school football has the biggest fan-base of any sport, hands down, and those that traveled to Fredericksburg’s Battlin Billie Stadium Friday night were treated to a great game.
The Billies are a team on the rise and in pre-game conversation their chain crew assured, "It’s the best team Fredericksburg’s put together in at least 10 years.”
Looking at their size and knowing more than 10-year history, that’s quite a statement.
Let the game begin. Burnet’s deep man Trenton Hafley had the Dawgs setting up shop at their own 26. Five plays into action QB Derek Kiser found Cody Jones on a quick screen and his lead blocking was spot on starting with Zach McLeskey on the edge.
Jared McHazlett, the Saldivar twins Christian and Christopher, and Jarrett Thornley showed tremendous hustle with lengthy down-field blocks, while Jones juked and jived all the way to the Fredericksburg five.
The Dawgs slipped a bit at this point and when Austin Huff’s 24-yard field goal attempt bounced off the right up-right the home crowd sounded off with cheers.
Burnet’s defense had their backs. Guys like Kody Hall, Eric Walker, Chase Mardis, and Hunter Thomas had the Billies in punt formation after five plays.
Punt return man Darius Johnson made some nifty moves to put Burnet at their own 34.
A quick Kiser to Blayne Parisher strike had the Bulldogs galloping into Billie’s territory to their 46-yard line.
Johnson added 12 more steps before Kiser found a wide-open Brock Foster down the left sideline for a 34-yard touchdown connection. Huff’s extra point was good to make it 7-0 with 5:16 left in the first.
