Dawgs move to 2-0

The Burnet Bulldogs hosted their home opener Friday night welcoming the Rockdale Tigers to town and when it was all said and done the Dawgs moved their season record to 2-0 with a 20-9 win. Burnet scored with 7:22 left in the first on a 32-yard Austin Huff field goal and at the end of the first the scored remained Burnet 3-Rockdale 0.
With just 1:34 left in the half Rockdale tied the game with a 35-yard field goal make it 3-3 at the break.
On the Dawgs second possession of the third quarter Huff sent up a beauty of a punt which hit the Rockdale return man and Brock Foster quickly pounced on the ball giving Burnet new life at the Tiger 17-yard line.
After three plays and an offsides penalty Huff added another 32-yard field goal with 1:51 left in the third quarter to put Burnet on top 6-3.
Following a couple of back and forth punts the Bulldogs used some great catches by Cody Jones and Darius Johnson to push the ball deep into Rockdale territory. On first and goal from the 2-yard line the Dawgs went to their power package and a direct snap to Trenton Hafley resulted in the game’s first touchdown. Huff tacked on the PAT and with 8:46 remaining the Dawgs had a 13-3 lead.
Jeremy Ayers helped lead Burnet’s next defensive stop and in just four short plays team green once again had control of the ball.
Derek Kiser completed pass to Hafley and Foster before Hafley took the honors from 2-yards out. Huff split the poles for the point after giving Burnet a 20-3 lead with just 3:37 to play.
The Tigers added a touchdown of their own on a quarterback sneak with just 1:15 left on the clock. Ayer dashed into the backfield on the PAT attempt and blocked the kick which brought the final score to 20-9 in the Bulldog’s favor.
Burnet who is currently 2-0 will host the Marble Falls Mustangs who moved to 1-1 after defeating Smithville on Friday night. It’s sure to be a packed house so get there early.
