The Burnet Bulldogs fell to 1-2 in district play Friday night with a 14-7 loss to the Liberty Hill Panthers who moved to 3-0 in 8-3A. Liberty Hill took first possession and ran off nine plays before being faced with a fourth and eight from the Burnet 27. The Panther QB dropped back looking to pass, was flushed out of the pocket by Chase Mardis and then rocked by Taylor Barksdale which caused a fumble that Cameron Chafin recovered for Burnet.
Burnet only ran three plays and gained just two-yards before being forced to punt. Liberty Hill’s next drive produced the game’s first points when on second and seven from the Burnet 34 a Panther busted loose and rumbled into the endzone. The PAT was good putting Liberty Hill on top, 7-0 with 3:19 in the first.
With 4:59 left in the half Burnet tried a 40-yard field goal but the kick sailed wide right and eventually the first half ended with the Panthers on top, 7-0.
The third quarter went by scoreless but with 8:12 left in the fourth Liberty Hill punched in a one-yard score and following the PAT they led, 14-0. The Panthers were able to keep the Bulldog offense on the sidelines when on the ensuing kickoff they recovered an onside kick. They ran off seven plays before Kody Hall and Lance Armentrout stopped them short on a fourth and seven attempt at the Burnet 29.
It only took two plays and 20 seconds for the Dawgs to march to the end zone. Derek Kiser hooked up with Brock Foster on down one and after slipping off a tackle at the 30 he raced all the way to the Panther nine. On the very next play Kiser hit Blayne Parisher on the right side of the zone. After Austin Huff’s PAT it was 14-7 with 4:15 to play.
Three plays later the Panthers were in punt formation. On second and five Kiser hit Parisher in the center of the field moving the ball into Liberty Hill territory at the 34. Two incomplete passes and a short connection to Cody Jones left the Dawgs facing a fourth and five from the Liberty Hill 10 with 49 seconds left to play. Burnet went to the air and the pass was picked off sealing the Panthers win, 14-7.
In other district news the 0-2 Lampasas Badgers knocked off Brownwood 61-56 with a last minute score while the Llano Yellow Jackets defeated Gatesville, 37-25. Burnet will host Llano on Friday, Nov. 1. For complete game information pick up Wednesday's Burnet Bulletin.
