Bertram city council members elected former councilman Glen Hopkins for a dual role during their regular meeting in council chambers last night. Hopkins was selected to fill the unexpired term of Dickie Allen, who stepped up from mayor pro tem to the mayor’s seat last month when Winnette Morris announced her immediate resignation.

Hopkin’s unanimous appointment as councilman and mayor pro tem took place only minutes after councilman John Mandigo nominated a second candidate, Allen Rogers; however, Mandigo’s motion died for lack of support.

After administering the oath of office to Hopkins, the council turned their attention to ongoing matters such as where to house the city’s police department. The police headquarters currently occupies a space inside the Bertram Volunteer Fire Department’s (BVFD) building; however, city officials are currently involved in a dispute over the lease agreement with the BVFD.
