Burnet officials give State of the Community
Gary Wideman, Burnet mayor, discusses the state of the community at a luncheon.

It’s all good, Burnet Mayor Gary Wideman and school Superintendent Keith McBurnett told a packed gathering of residents and community leaders last week at a state of the community lunch.

Wideman touted the city council’s responsible stewardship of the city’s finances and assets and McBurnett detailed the progress the school administration and board of trustees have made in combating a significant budget shortfall.

"This is probably one of the most fiscally conservative group of guys around,” Wideman said in paying tribute to his fellow city council members.

The mayor recalled that the city had an $80,000 surplus less than two years ago, but now has a $2.5 million reserve fund and has paid off hundreds of thousands of dollars in short term debt.
