LIBERTY HILL – Liberty Hill welcomed Llano to its sparkling new Panther Stadium Friday night. It wasn’t much fun for the visiting Yellow Jackets, who lost 54-21.
It was the District 8-3A opener for both teams. Llano is 2-4 while Liberty Hill improved to 5-1.
The Yellow Jackets’ defense did a good job against the Panthers’ high-octane Single Wing attack in the first half, limiting the home team to 146 yards. LHHS led 21-14 at halftime.
But the dam burst after intermission. By game’s end the first-place Panthers had amassed 465 rushing yards on 45 carries and outscored Llano 33-7 in the second half – all while throwing nary a pass. None. Zip. Nada. It was Darrell Royal-style football, circa 1963.
Llano welcomed quarterback Layton Rabb back after missing him for four non-district games. The 6-5 senior was a little rusty, but still completed 15 of 27 passes for 151 yards, throwing two interceptions. Rabb also rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
Liberty Hill continued Llano opponents’ habit of keying on running back Carter Tatsch. The speedy senior was held in check, gaining 35 yards on 12 carries, although he did score a touchdown.
Llano’s best run of the night came from seldom-used-on-offense Sawyer Stiles, who danced down the right sideline for a 16-yard score that tied things at 14-14 in the second quarter.
Llano hosts Lampasas Friday night.
