The Bulldogs opened their 2012 season on Friday night by hosting the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies. Burnet jumped out to a big 20-0 lead with three first half touchdowns. The Dawgs first score came on the opening drive of the game. On a first and goal from the 1-yard line Burnet junior QB Derek Kiser dove into the end zone. Austin Huff booted the PAT and with 8:44 remaining in the first Burnet was up 7-0 and that’s how the first quarter ended.
The Dawgs scored on back-to-back drives in the second quarter. Kiser completed a beautiful pass to Cory Cavender for a touchdown with 8:11 left in the second, followed by a 5-yard Trenton Hafley rushing score with just 19 seconds left in the half. Huff made the first PAT and at the break Burnet led 20-0.
Fredericksburg opened the second half with two scoring drives and when the third came to a close it was a close ball game with Burnet hanging on to a 20-14 lead.
On the very first play of the fourth quarter another long pass play resulted in the Billies’ go ahead touchdown as the PAT brought the score to 21-20.
Burnet answered on their next drive which lasted 15 plays and was capped off with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Kiser to Cameron Langley. It was a great leaping catch by Langley and after Huff’s PAT Burnet was back on top, 26-21.
Fredericksburg had two more possessions but the first was spoiled by Aaron Johns who knocked down a passing attempt on fourth down, and Blayne Parisher ended all hopes picking off a Billie pass with just seconds left in the game.
The Dawgs will take their 1-0 record on the road next Friday as they travel to Rockdale. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
