The Burnet Bulldogs and Marble Falls Mustangs put up a combined 107 points in Friday night’s grid-iron grudge match with the Stangs coming out on top, 56-51.
Burnet fumbled the first two kick-offs of the game and Marble Falls recovered each of them. With just over one minute gone from the contest the Stangs had a 14-0 lead.
Burnet posted their first score on a 20-yard Derek Kiser pass to Blayne Parisher and with 1:48 left in the first it was 14-7 Marble Falls.
Early in the second quarter the turnover bug struck the Dawgs again and six plays later Marble Falls cashed it in to go up 21-7.
Following a Chase Mardis interception Kiser hit Parisher from 6-yards out but a missed extra-point left the Dawgs trailing 20-13.
Each team added one more score before the break and at the half the Stangs held a 28-20 lead.
After the break it was back and forth scoring for each team, and at the end of the third it was 49-35 with Marble Falls still in the lead.
Burnet found themselves trailing 56-42 with seven minutes left to play. Kiser and company went to work and with great catches by Cody Jones and Parisher the Dawgs set-up a first and goal from the 4-yard line. Trenton Hafley took a screen pass and made some nice moves to break into the endzone with just 3:04 to play. Austin Huff hit the PAT bringing the score to 56-49.
Lance Armentrout sent the hometown crowd into a frenzy when he recovered the ensuing onside kick giving the Dawgs another shot. Complete passes to Jones and Parisher moved Burnet inside the redzone, but one run resulting in a loss and two incomplete passes had Burnet looking at a fourth and 11 from the Marble Falls 20. Kiser completed the pass to Hafley who fought hard but the play came up short.
The Mustangs ran 1:26 off the clock with two run plays, two knees, and a safety which ended the game and brought the final score to 56-51.
Burnet totaled 574 yards of total offense. Kiser threw for 353 yards and rushed for 90 more. Hafley carried the ball 21 times for 130 yards. Marble Falls had 415 yards passing. Garrett Gray finished with 14 receptions for 202 yards and five touchdowns. The Stangs totaled 455 yards.
