Dawgs fall in final seconds to Lions, 36-31

The Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking loss in their district opener Friday night in Brownwood, 36-31.
Burnet scored on the game’s opening drive but on the ensuing kick-off the Lions broke free for an 84-yard kickoff return touchdown. A missed extra point left the Dawgs on top 7-6 with 8:24 remaining in the first.
The Lions took their first lead with 1:18 left in the opening quarter on a 14-yard pass and catch. Following the PAT it was 13-7, Brownwood.
Burnet managed one more score before the break but Brownwood held a 27-14 lead after two more touchdowns in the second period.
When the second half began the Dawg’s defense forced a quick three and out and the offensive got things going with a score on their very first possession. Burnet moved to with in six following the PAT, 27-21.
On the Bulldogs first possession of the fourth quarter Trenton Hafley rolled off seven straight runs with the last being a five yard score. Austin Huff’s PAT split the poles putting the Dawgs back on top, 28-27.
The lead changed again with just 2:48 left in the contest. Brownwood’s drive stalled at the Burnet 20 and they elected to kick the field goal which was good putting them up, 30-28.
Burnet got off 10 plays that included a fourth down and inches pick-up to move to the Brownwood 19-yard line where they were eventually faced with a fourth and four. With just 31 seconds on the clock Huff sent a 36-yard field goal right down the middle and the Bulldog faithful erupted with the Dawgs once again in the lead, 31-28.
That energy made a fast leap across the field when on the ensuing kickoff the Lion deep man elected to bring out the ball from six yards deep. The gamble paid off as he cross the goal line with only 14 seconds remaining in the game. The PAT failed but Brownwood was on top, 36-31.
The Bulldogs ran two plays including a nice pick-up on a Derek Kiser to Cody Jones reception but time ran out and the Lions claimed the victory.
Brownwood, Gatesville, and Liberty Hill each picked up wins in the District 8-3A openers. Burnet will host Gatesville at Bulldog stadium this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. For complete game information and stats pick-up Wednesday’s Burnet Bulletin.
