He is survived by sons Keith and David; daughter-in-law Johnna; grandchildren Derek, Taylor, and Megan; sisters Mary Lee Francis and husband Doug, and Chell Ann Golla and husband Damian; brother Rod Montz and wife Barbara; sisters-in-laws Carolyn Michael and Louise Roemer; and many nieces and nephews.
Montz grew up in Houston, attended the University of Texas at Austin for his freshman and sophomore years, and graduated from the College of Santa Fe, N.M. in 1950 with a degree in English and History. He was a teacher with the Christian Brothers for three years. He served in the United States Army during the later part of the Korean War. He received his commission as an officer at graduation from the Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning Ga., and remained for the balance of service time as a cadre officer at the school. After getting out of the service, Montz started his 31-year career with Prudential Insurance Company of America, and held various managerial, administrative, and executive jobs. At retirement, he moved to Sugarland, Texas, and in 1996 he moved to Horseshoe Bay.
Montz was a devout Catholic and a very active member of the St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Horseshoe Bay. He served as head of the Parish council for four years, and later he was head of the Finance Council for four years.
But Choir membership during all this time was his special joy.
Tennis was a most welcomed sport in which he played up to his 85th year. He also enjoyed duplicate bridge participation and made many good friends from both activities.
Montz was also involved with many charitable and social services over the years.
A Mass Celebration of Jims life will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Horseshoe Bay at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, with a reception to follow at Quail Point. Those wishing may make memorial Donations may do so to the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s social work with the needy, 9000 Hwy 2147 W. Suite 200, Horseshoe Bay.
