He was born May 23, 1936, in Algona, Iowa. He was the eldest of three children born to Edward Daniel and Margaret (Mitchell) Kelly. He spent much of his childhood on Lake Okoboji where he developed his passion for water sports and his sailboat "Herself.” Kelly graduated from Emmetsburg High School, attended Notre Dame and later graduated from Creighton Medical School. He began his medical career in Emmetsburg, Iowa and later opened his own practice in Burnet. Kelly was still practicing medicine in Houston until weeks before his death.
His family and service to his community were a top priority in his life. He married Karen Leitch in January 1971 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Together they had four children: three amazing daughters and a fourth who was fairly decent. Kelly spent many of his later years inspiring people at the Men’s Center in Houston.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
