Born on Nov. 9, 1916 in Harrisonburg, La., he moved to Texas where he attended the University of Texas, receiving a BS in Petroleum Engineering in 1938 and an MS in Petroleum Engineering in 1941.
He pursued a distinguished career as a petroleum engineer, serving as a senior vice-president of Tenneco. After retirement Oliphant continued to consult in the industry.
He collected and restored antique cars and was active in The Horseless Carriage Club of America for many years. In later years, he enjoyed life with his friends and family on Lake LBJ where he was known as the one who could fix anything.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Patterson Oliphant, grandson Shawn Oliphant, and second wife Alice Jane Redmon Oliphant.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Jane Oliphant; his son Stephen Oliphant and wife Linda; daughter Connie Welsch and husband Andy; sister Mollie Oliphant; grandchildren Shannon Gordon, Samantha Fisher, Glenn Welsch, and Allison Reimers; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the Church at Horseshoe Bay on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 at 2 p.m., with Pete Christy officiating.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Church at Horseshoe Bay. Condolences may be offered at www.clementswilcoxfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home of Marble Falls.
