He served his county in the Navy, in the aviation electronics field, from 1946-1950. From 1952 to 1969 he was a butcher, then became a successful meat market manager for Furrís and Piggly Wiggly stores. When Troy and Joy moved to Kingsland they owned and operated Vassarís Food Market from 1969 to 1990.
Troy is survived by sisters Monette Yarborough, Sylvia (J. Lee) Pruitt, Rita Piepers and brother Duffy (Nancy) Vassar. He is also survived by his children Wesley (Barbara) Hodges of Fallon, Nev., Karen (Roger) Long of Kingsland, Deborah Perry of Llano, Janice (Charlie) Chitwood of Kingsland, Richard (Linda) Vassar of Bridgeport, Texas, Lisa (Chuck) McMains of Santa Fe, Texas, Alan (Angela) Vassar of Kingsland, 21 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother James Vassar, brothers-in-law Haven Yarborough and Jim Pieters, son Larry Vassar, daughter-in-law Dorthea Vassar, sons-in-law Lee Nobles and Leonard Perry, grandchildren Kinberly Jo Chitwood and Christopher Charles McMains, and great grandchild Layne Nobles.
Viewing was held 9 to 5 p.m. on Monday, May 13, 2013, at Putnam Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at the Highland Lakes United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 1 p.m. with burial following at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park Cemetery on Park Road 4, Burnet County. Reverend Grady Roe will officiate. The Highland Lakes Honor Guard will furnish military honors. An online guest register may be signed at www.PutnamCares.com.
