Gerald Dale Martin of Oak Ridge Estates passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013 at his home.
He was born Oct. 25, 1924 in Columbus, Ohio to Earl Martin and Marie Davis. He graduated from East High School and finished one quarter of college at Ohio State University when he was drafted into the US Army on January 15, 1942. He courageously served in the European Theater of WWII, landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy on June 12 (D-day + 6), 1944. He spent the winter of 1944 in Germany’s Hertgen Forest, was in the Battle of the Bulge and walked across the Bridge at Ramegan. When the war was over he returned to Columbus, Ohio and reenrolled at Ohio State from which he graduated in 1948.
Jerry was employed by Prudential Insurance Co. of America and became one of its youngest managers, building a new headquarters in Toledo, Ohio. He quickly rose to the top in the Insurance field – leading Prudential in production several years and being a longtime member of the Million Dollar Round Table.
He met his first wife in Ohio with whom he had three children; Rebecca, Joshua, and Nancy. In the early 1960s, Jerry moved to Santa Ana, Calif., where he opened his own insurance brokerage company, The Martin Company. In 1968 he met Judy Ann Glismann. They married a year later and built a wonderful life of 44 years together.
Jerry loved being on the water, whether it was in a rented outboard on Lake Erie, a crew member of the yawl GRACIE, cruising the coastal Pacific on his beloved Grand Banks Trawler, or spending warm summer days relaxing and fishing on Lake LBJ with his pontoon.
Besides their boating days, Jerry (always a hard worker and adventurer) and Judy had many rich and varied experiences together. As avid travelers they covered the US from Key West to Lake Louise, Canada, traveled nearly every road in the western states in their 5th wheel, and rode mules to the bottom of the Grand Canyon four times. They also developed virgin land and built a Victorian home in Temecula, CA along with a 300-tree commercial grapefruit grove. After selling the CA ranch they went "on the road” before settling in the Hill Country in October 1995. They joined St. Peter’s Lutheran Church where they devoted much of their time and energy and were surrounded by a loving faith community.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Judy Martin, of Horseshoe Bay; daughter, Dr. Rebecca Martin-Gerhards, of Portland, Ore; son, Joshua Martin, of Austin; daughter, Nancy Moore, of Round Rock; three grandchildren, one great granddaughter; and sister, June Ott, of Dublin, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. The inurnment will follow at 2 p.m. at Lakeland Hills Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, gifts and memorials can be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
