Water Bill Stuck in Senate Maneuver

A bill authored by Sen. Troy Fraser (R-Horseshoe Bay) that would rein in what Highland Lakes interests regard as the Lower Colorado River Authority's willful violation of a 1989 court order to protect the water needs of the cities of Austin and Burnet and other firm water customers continues to languish in the Senate because of a blocking maneuver by an ally of rice farmers in the river's lower basin.

BCISD preliminary budget shows $280,000 deficit

The Burnet Consolidated Independent School District’s projected expenses for the 2013-2014 school year are $280,000 more than expected revenues but Superintendent Keith McBurnett told the district’s board of trustees Monday evening he expects to present a balanced budget at a June 3 meeting.

"The good thing is that we know this on April 29,” McBurnett said. "Last year it was the middle of June before we had this kind of information.”

McBurnett and the BCISD staff presented board members with a preliminary budget after assembling individual budgets and requests from the district’s department heads.

"I believe we will have a balanced budget proposal for the board at our next budget meeting June 3,” McBurnett said.

The HITS triathlon brought more than runners, swimmers and bicyclists to town this weekend. It brought in some business to hotels and a few restaurants but brought a weekend sales slump to several others.

HITS triathlon ties up traffic

HITS triathlon disrupted the flow of Marble Falls traffic Saturday with outside lane closures on U.S. 281 near the Marble Falls Bridge.
"It's congested right now," said Marble Falls police Sgt. Steve Eckstein around noon Saturday.

Friday fire in Horseshoe Bay investigated

Horseshoe Bay fire investigators are looking into the cause a fire that broke out Friday night at a three-story condominium complex in that city.
