Texas unemployment rate holds steady

AUSTIN — The Texas economy added 38,000 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in August, for a total of 259,500 nonfarm jobs added since last year. Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 7.1 percent in August. The July rate was revised down from 7.2 to 7.1 percent. The state’s unemployment rate is down from 8.1 percent a year ago, and below the national unemployment rate in August of 8.1 percent.

Burnet fights to improve its finances

 When City of Burnet officials closed the books on Fiscal Year 2003, the city had a grand total of $37,400 in the bank, a dangerously low amount that could have resulted in devastation for the city if it had suffered some sort of destructive natural disaster or emergency.

Flap over county road ‘work’ raises questions

The flare-up that has resulted from an anonymous caller’s complaint to the county auditor that county personnel and equipment were used to repair a road in a private subdivision has ruffled the feathers and the feelings of Burnet County’s commissioners and ignited a lot of talk about roads.

County passes 6 percent tax hike

The Burnet County Commissioners Tuesday approved a proposed budget and tax rate for Fiscal Year 2013 that will result in a six percent increase in property taxes for county residents.
