The Burnet Bulldog’s 2009 season came to an end Friday night in Mineral Wells with a 27-21 loss to the Burkburnett Bulldogs. Burkburnett posted the first points of the game with 5:57 left in the first when they blocked a 35-yard Burnet field goal attempt and returned some 70-yards for a score. The PAT made it 7-0 which would also be the score at the end of the first.

With 10:04 left in the half Burkburnett increased their lead to 13-0 with a 21-yard touchdown toss. The PAT came up short, but the Bulldogs were now in desperate need of a score. They got it on their very next drive. Dillon Chafin took turns completing passes to Brandon Jacque, Stephen Young, and Jathan Craig before Craig busted loose out of the wildcat for a 34-yard score. Clark’s kick made it 13-7 with 6:45 left in the half.

Burnet’s special teams standout Quade Stubblefield had the Dawgs right back in business as he quickly jumped on an onside kick, but on the very next play an interception put an end to the drive.

Burkburnett move the ball down-field 61-yards picking up five first downs along the way and capped it off with a 3-yard QB keep putting them up 20-7 with 2:05 left in the half.

Burnet did an excellent job moving the ball behind some great running by Craig and clutch catches by Spencer Thurman, but on a first and ten from the 12 a Bulldog fumble bounced through the end zone for a Burkburnett touchback ending the first half.

Four runs by Craig and a nice Chafin to Jacque connected had Burnet looking great on their first possession of the second half, but on a first and goal from the nine, while fighting for extra yards in traffic, Craig lost control of the ball and Burkburnett dodged another bullet.

After holding Burkburnett three and out the Bulldog O took back to the field. Craig churned out 60-yard on this drive in ending it with a 30-yard score, and after Clark’s kick it was 20-14 with 6:58 in the third.

The Burkburnett group answered just three plays later with a QB sneak that went 51-yards for a score, after the PAT it was 27-14 with 4:48 in the third.

Burnet pulled within six after an awesome 20-yard touchdown catch by Thurman in the corner of the end zone, followed by the Clark kick making it 27-21 with 8:56 to play. Burkburnett was stopped at their own 5-yard line on the ensuing kickoff, but slowly marched 90-yards in 15-plays draining the remaining minutes off the clock and picking up a 27-21 win in the process.
