Hustle plays such as this loose ball scramble and pass from Shanise Graeter to Mandi Lindley helped push the Lady Dawgs past Gatesville in the Bi-District round of the 3A state playoffs. Burnet defeated the Lady Hornets 58-44 to advance to the next round.

The Lady Bulldogs had one last order of business last week before their journey in the playoffs could begin, and that was hosting Canyon Lake on Tuesday night.

The Lady Dawgs successfully wrapped up their district schedule with a win over the Lady Hawks, 69-25.

It was an emotional night with parent and senior night activities before the game, and it seemed the girls carried that emotion onto the courts at tipoff. For some, it was their final game on the Bulldog court, and every girl on the team wanted to put on a big show, not only for their parents, but also for the home crowd.

It didn’t take long for that show to begin. Burnet opened the first period raining down shots left and right totaling 14 points, while the defense suffocated the Canyon crew holding them to three points.

The second period ended pretty much the same way, as Burnet put up 21 more to the Hawks’ 6.

The girls in green matched their 21-point performance in the third and added 13 more in the fourth, while holding Canyon to just 16 second-half points for the 69-25 win.

“We raced out to a big lead with some good defense and shot the ball well from the field and the free-throw line,” Coach Cavender said.

“It was really nice to see the confidence displayed on the free-throw line. Everyone got to play lots of minutes and get some work in on the floor under game conditions.

“These kids have had a great season and are looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead as the journey continues into the state playoffs,” added Cavendar.

Team stats for the game included two-point field goals—21 of 42 for 50 percent; three-point field goals—4 of 16 for 25 percent; free-throw line—15 of 20 for 75 percent; rebounds—offensive 10, defensive 23, total 33; assists—13; steals—22; blocks—2; turnovers—18; hustle plays—8; and deflections—17.

Individual stat leaders for rebounding belonged to Lindley 5 and Flint, Sultemeir, and Wilfong with 4 each.

Assists went to Lindley 3 and Martin, Graeter, Rockafellow, and Canty with 2 each.

Graeter and Rockafellow led with steals with 5 each; Martin and Towslee with 3 each.

Blocks went to Rockafellow and Flint with 1 each.

Hustle plays belonged to Rockafellow and Graeter with 2 each.

Deflections went to Cozart with 6 and Graeter 4.

Scoring the points were Martin 13, Towslee 10, Lindley 8, Graeter 7, Sultemeir 7, Rockafellow 6, Smith 5, McClennen 4, Canty 3, Cozart 2, Robinson 2, and Walker 2.

The Lady Dawgs finished their regular season with an overall record of 22-10, 9-3 in district.

On Monday night, the girls opened the bidistrict round of the playoffs against Gatesville.

Things in this game started out slow with the first points of the game coming more than four minutes into the contest.

Gatesville hit a long-range, three-point shot to open up the scoring. With less than one minute to play in the first the game would be knotted at six all. Brook Rockafellow came on strong down the stretch of the first period hitting a three-point bucket of her own, followed by two successful free throws to give Burnet an 11-6 lead.

Rockafellow was at it again, hitting another three-point shot at the beginning of the second, but Gatesville added two last-second free throws to tie things up at 19 all at the break.

The game was still knotted in a tie at 29 all with 2:15 left to play in the third when Manda Martin drilled a trey. Gatesville returned the favor with a three-point shot to tie it back up, but Martin answered the call with another three-point bucket giving Burnet the lead back at 36-32. That wasn’t the final points of the quarter, however, as Christina Henderson got in on the three-point game as well with a long-range buzzer beater, bringing the score to 39-32.

Henderson opened the fourth the same way she closed the third: with a three-point bucket, and the girls in green went on to score 19 in the period and win the bidistrict round, 58-44.

Martin scored 13, followed by Rockafellow and Towslee with 12, Henderson 6, Graeter 5, Cozart 4, and Sultemeir 4.

The girls have a bye this Friday and are expected to play next Tuesday night, possibly against Liberty Hill if they win out this week.

Congrats to Coach Cavender and the Lady Dawgs!
