A lightning bolt left Burnet residents without power for about an hour Friday as crews repaired an electric device west of town.

The incident disrupted operations at Seton Highland Lakes Hospital’s imaging lab, a spokesperson said. The lights also went out at a swim meet in the Galloway-Hammond Recreation Center.

“One of the major wires got hit by lightning in the hills west of US 281 and blew out a device that protects lightning from carrying down power lines,” said Michael Steele, Burnet city manager. “The device was very difficult to reach and one of our utility trucks got stuck there.”

Steele said the outage, which occurred at about 10:30 a.m., impacted electricity from Delaware Springs to Galloway-Hammond.
