All five students from Marble Falls High School who traveled to Fort Hood Thursday are home safely, according to a statement by Dr. Ryder Warren, superintendent of Marble Falls Independent School District.

The students were at the base for the annual Rotary Club's job-shadowing program, according to Warren.

"As of 9:45 p.m., all students returned safely home and are in their parents care," he said.

Warren thanked Herb and Doris Lewis, two Rotary sponsors, who were with the students locked down and protected inside the base when the incident occurred.

"Herb kept in constant contact with me throughout the event," Warren said. "They assured (me) the students were in contact with their parents as well.

"Herb and Doris went above and beyond the call of duty with this issue."

While students were visiting Fort Hood, 12 people were killed and 31 others injured in a shooting spree that began around 1:30 p.m.

Major news outlets have reported the arrested gunman was an Army psychiatrist.
