State, county and city law enforcement engaged in a frantic manhunt Monday for a convict who escaped some time Sunday evening from the four-month-old Burnet County Jail.

Residents of Oak Vista, a neighborhood adjacent to the jail, were left frightened and angry about the escape, with many residents complaining they were not told that a dangerous criminal might be on the loose in their neighborhood until Monday morning— about 12 hours after the escape.

Nuana Antonio Fuentes-Sanchez, a native of El Salvador, was still on the loose Monday night and investigators had no firm leads, at least none they would reveal publicly. An automated call from authorities Monday night alerted residents to be on high alert for the escapee.

It was unclear why it took about 11 hours before the public was alerted to the escape, and how long it took for Southwestern, the jail contractor, to notify county officials. Sheriff W.T. Smith said he learned of the escape after midnight, and then he rushed to the jail and a thorough search of the 96,000-square-foot premises. He said he was unsure when sheriff dispatcher was notified.

In April, Fuentes-Sanchez was arrested along with four others and charged with aggravated robbery in connection with the beating of a man and the rape of his wife in the Stone Mountain subdivision near Marble Falls - a crime one investigator said was among the most brutal in Burnet County in the past 10 years.

Members of the Texas Rangers, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the Texas Department of Public Safety Air Support joined the sheriff's office and officers with the police departments of Burnet, Marble Falls and Granite Shoals in a hunt that included officers on horses, flying in a helicopter and leading bloodhounds into dense prickly woods near the jail.

On Monday afternoon, at least a dozen police officers, sheriff deputies and correctional officers were stationed throughout the Oak Vista subdivision. Some officers held shotguns, and one officer handed out fliers with a photocopy of the missing convict and his general description: an Hispanic man, 23, with a slender build standing 5 foot 8, 165 pounds, black hair, brown eyes. Investigators believe he was wearing orange-colored jail pants, a white T-shirt, white socks and no shoes when he bolted.

At an afternoon press conference, Sheriff Smith asked people with any leads to call the county at 512.756.8080.

I wonder if you (or your daughter) thought of thanking the Officers for the good work THEY were doing. Nevermind the fact that you were not notified by the "powers that be," what about the officers on the street. I saw them standing in the HOT sun - all day trying to make sure that YOU and your family was safe. They were being yelled and cussed at by one woman! You may want to redirect your anger to the "Higher ups" that were supposed to make the decisions - NOT the officer on the street. They are there to do a job and it's not a pleasant one - I'm sure. I for one and glad they are there doing the job they do. I cannot imagine how it must feel to walk into HELL every day to do a job, and then get yelled at and ridiculed by the very people you are trying to keep safe! I'm not saying that you don't have a reason to be angry. I'm just saying that you should be angry at the right people.

It was insane, unprofessional and VERY unsafe for the general public NOT to be notified of this inmates escape. Everyone in nearby neighborhoods were put in danger due to the inefficiency of the management of this escape. My daughter found out about this as she left the neighborhood to go to school. This convict could have been hiding in her car and she would have unknowingly stepped into danger. Something MUST be done so that this doesn't happen again. Nearby citizens should be notified IMMEDIATELY!! No exceptions!!!
