A 42-year-old Granite Shoals man was arrested by warrant Monday night for allegations of deer poaching in Horseshoe Bay on Nov. 15, officials with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said.
Rorigo Trovar posted a $2,500 bail at Burnet County Jail Tuesday morning where he was taken by Llano County Game Wardens.
Hunting from a vehicle on a public road is a Class-A misdemeanor under Parks and Wildlife Code and punishable up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. A civil recovery value is also charged.
On Nov. 15, Horseshoe Bay Police Officer Thomas Kingery spotted Rodrigo Trovar and three juveniles parked in a wooded, non-residential part of the city.
Trovar and a juvenile waited inside as two juveniles pulled out an apparent kill from the underbrush.
Kingery found “a freshly killed 12-point buck laying in the brushy near the vehicle,” according officials.
The buck was shot from the vehicle, officials believe.
Texas Game Wardens Sean Reneau and Kevin Webb were called. They confiscated a single .22 caliber rifle and the buck at the scene. The TGW will lead the investigation.
Trovar has a clean criminal record relating to poaching, according to officials, though evidence suggests this may not be the man’s first expedition, said Bill Lane, Horseshoe Bay police chief.
Criminal charges against the three juveniles related to Trovar have not been filed.
City investigations into poaching has been ongoing for a year, but has picked up in the last two to three months, Lane said.
“This time last year, we discovered a similar violation that resulted in some arrests.”
Reneau said the problem is more noticeable now, as the population in the city has increased. Arrests are more difficult to make when poachers choose less-populated areas.
“When they’re driving down a community road (and poaching) with 10 to 12 houses on it, it comes to life more,” Reneau said.
The arrest follows a year’s worth of communication between TPWD officials and city law enforcement.
