The Smithwick Cemetery Association’s former treasurer turned herself into Travis County Jail and faces a third-degree felony charge in connection with the theft of about $60,000 from the cemetery board.

Joan Shafer, 56, of Marble Falls, was charged with theft of property between $20,000 and $100,000 Monday following a subpoena of her personal bank account, said Burnet County Sheriff W.T. Smith.

Though Shafer’s bond was set at $20,000, Judge Mike Lynch of the 167th District Court released her on a bond of personal recognizance within 30 minutes of her arrest, said Roger Wade, public information officer for Travis County.
