What’s in a name, the origin of March

We get the name of the third month of the year – March, from the Latin word, Marticus. Marticus was named after Mars, the Roman god of war.

Being unsure of the reason that March had been the first month of the year in the ancient calendar, the reason now seems clearer.

In ancient Rome, March, (Marticus) marked the start of the military campaign season. The weather was now suitable for resuming warfare. Winter was about over.
