Over the past two weeks the Burnet tennis team competed at the Gatesville Tournament and the Marble Falls Tournament. Several athletes picked up medals along the way.
In Gatesville on Friday, March 28 the Burnet players faced several talented athletes from both the 4A and 5A level. “ Despite the high level of competition, our athletes achieved great success,” said head coach Brandon Cunningham.
Nick Dietrich represented Burnet in the boys’ singles bracket and did well. He advanced all the way to the quarterfinals.
“Although he faced a tough opponent in the quarterfinals and fell short, his performance was impressive,” said Coach Cunningham.
Mixed-doubles partners Alex Burns and Callen Smith earned several wins in Gatesville. They eventually finished in fourth place overall.
Aly VanZandt competed in the girls’ singles bracket. This bracket included top players from Liberty Hill and Leander Glenn. She played great and narrowly lost in the championship earning a second place overall finish.
“I am incredibly proud of how our athletes performed. Their continued improvement is a promising sign as the district tournament is just around the corner,” said Cunningham.
This past Friday Burnet varsity tennis team played in the Marble Falls Tournament.
“We did outstanding at this tournament,” noted Coach Cunningham.
The mixed-doubles team of Burns and Smith did a great job and captured a silver finish for their efforts.
“This was a well-deserved second place finish for Burns and Smith continuing their strong tournament success,” said Cunningham.
Dietrich also picked up a silver medal for his efforts in Marble Falls. Dietrich played impressively, advancing all the way to the championship where he narrowly fell short ultimately finishing second.
VanZandt dominated the competition she faced in girls’ singles and earned the tournament Championship.
“After finishing second and first in her last two tournaments Aly is clearly finding her rhythm just as we approach the district tournament,” said Cunningham.
“All of our athletes displayed remarkable resilience, fighting until the very end and bringing home some well-earned hardware. I’m incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication,” added Cunningham.
