If you just look at the final score to Friday night’s softball game versus state ranked Gateway you might thing it was more lop-sided than it actually was. Burnet’s girls played a great game through seven innings keeping the Lady Gators scoreless. On the other side of that Gateway did the same and when regulation ended it was still all zeros on the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the seventh, Halle Maxwell got a hold of a pitch and sent it flying to center field. With the crack of the bat many thought it might be a walk-off homerun. It was just short of that and resulted in a triple putting Maxwell in scoring position with two outs. Unfortunately a strikeout followed, and the game moved into extra innings.
Before Burnet could stop the onslaught Gateway added up nine runs in the top of the eighth. A few walks, a few errors, an inside the park grandslam, several singles and a double all led to the big advancement in the Lady Gator’s score.
Burnet had one shot left in the bottom of the eighth but was retired in three with a ground out, strikeout, and fly out.
Burnet only recorded three hits in the game. Maxwell’s triple and singles by Journey Denton and Lacie Lewis.
Crawford pitched the first seven innings allowing seven hits and seven runs, six earned, with three walks and a dozen strikeouts. Carlee Williams finished the game allowing three hits, two runs, with one walk.
On Tuesday, April 1 Burnet’s girls also fell short to Salado on the road, 3-0. Their current district record is 5-4. The girls had a bye on Tuesday and will be at Marble Falls this Friday, April 11. Their final week of district play will have them hosting Taylor for senior night on Tuesday, April 15 followed by an away game at Lampasas on Friday, April 17.
