Bits of Bertram

Members of the Bertram Chamber of Commerce were given an update on Burnet County at the chamber luncheon this past week.

Burnet County Judge Bryan Wilson spoke about the importance of having a responsive and accountable local government that puts people first. He stressed the need for the county to be very accountable, to utilize funds and properly run the county operations and the population grows.

Back to Paper Ballots Judge Wilson mentioned how one of his initiatives was to change the county back to a paper ballot voting system, and how well that went at the last election. He emphasizes a performance-based budget system where every dollar spent is accounted for. He also stressed the importance of supporting public safety and has allocated funds to upgrade jails and vehicles. He has held meetings with public safety agencies across the county and will do the same with the fire departments and emergency medical workers. Judge Wilson also mentioned a county-wide meeting during the second week of June to address people in crisis.

Schoolhouse Preservation

Precinct 2 County Commissioner Damon Beierle presented about the work being done at the Briggs School house as part of the county’s historic preservation and plans to repair the Joppa Bridge. He also stated that he has been in contact with representatives from Tx-DOT on a project to add right-hand turn lanes onto county roads off Texas 29, hopefully to be done in conjunction with Tx-DOT projects along that highway. Commissioner Beierle also spoke about a recent water study and its negative results, which accentuate the need to slow down building and look for sustainable growth for the future of the county.

Library Readers

I, Chamber Business Manager Betty Predmore, was invited to read during the Bertram Library Storytime this past week. I read “Oh Dear!,” a book that was a long-time favorite of her children. The library has enjoyed several guest readers in May and they have a great lineup of programs for the summer.

Lego Club will be starting on Tuesday June 10. This club will run every Tuesday from 3-4 p.m. through the end of July. The club is open to ages 5-10, and kids must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required. Some of the summer programs scheduled include: June 5: A Real Madhatter Bubble Show; June 11: Daniel G. Bones Science Show; June 12: “What’s that Scat?” by the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. These programs begin at 10:30 a.m.

After-School Luau

Several families enjoyed the After School Luau hosted by The Frozen Affair and Sparrow Mobile Bar this past Wednesday. There were activities spread out on the lawn, the Hill Country Express Mini Train was on hand to give rides to the kids, who also enjoyed ice cream treats served in coconut shells and decorated with umbrellas by The Frozen Affair. Sparrow Mobile Bar offered adult beverages, and Vaughan St. Mercantile offered a huge 40% off storewide in the boutique.

Make plans to attend the third Annual Summer Splash Bash on June 5 from 6-8 p.m. Hosted by the Bertram Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the City of Bertram and the Highland Lakes Area YMCA, there will be free swimming at Bertram City Pool, along with free hot dogs, snow cones, and more with additional sponsors RBank, Katy Duke – GEC Real Estate, Double Eagle Entertainment, Rollo Insurance and Damon Beierle County Commissioner Precinct 2.
