Two Burnet High School powerlifters were named the Outstanding Lite Platform lifters in the season’s first meet hosted by Burnet Jan. 15.

They are Nathan Torres for the Bulldogs and Lily Rygaard for the Lady Dawgs.

Simply the platform medalists usually go to the lifters who weigh the least and lift the most weight.

”Nathan has been doing it for the last three years,” Burnet coach Zane Hicks said. “He’s a senior. It takes time to get that strong. Lily is very dedicated to what she’s done. She’s been in the program for three years, and she works really well, works really hard.”

The Bulldogs finished third overall in the team competition with 32 points, while the Lady Dawgs were fifth overall with 16 points.

Hicks said just about every returner set a new personal record throughout the meet, which he believes is a great way to start the season.

”I liked a lot of the young kids,” he said. “I thought they did a really good job. It’s hard when you’ve never done it before when you are a freshman. None of them won their class, but it’s hard to even get through all three lifts without bombing out or missing a lift. So I applaud a lot of the young kids.”

Teams came from across central Texas including Bastrop, San Saba and Llano.

”It’s good to lift against people you don’t normally lift against,” Hicks said.

He noted an event of that magnitude doesn’t happen without the help of numerous volunteers. The meet began at 4:30 p.m. and ended at 10:30 p.m.

”People were a lot more willing to help run it because it takes spotters and judges and table workers and people,” he said. “That’s not even to mention the kids who are actually lifting. It goes through probably 80 people, 80 volunteers and we had about 180 actual athletes lift.”

Burnet will participate in the Lampasas meet Thursday, Jan. 22, at 4:30 p.m.
