What’s in a name? Digging up the roots of September

The ancient Roman calendar began with March, so September was the seventh month. Later when a 12 month calendar was in place, September became the ninth month, but kept its name.

Time to Sing

On Thursday evening, Sept. 5, the Peace Christian Church at Mahomet is holding an event for folks who would like to get together and sing. The time is 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

An invitation is extended to anyone who wishes to join a group of friends and neighbors for an evening of singing.

Plans are underway to host this singing event on the first Thursday evening of each month.

The church building that was destroyed by arson a few years ago has been rebuilt and given a new name – Peace Christian Church at Mahomet The church is located at 10451 E. FM 243, Bertram 78605.

Briggs Meeting President Crystal Kinsey wishes to remind everyone that the Monday, Sept. 9 meeting will be held in the Briggs Baptist Church fellowship hall at 6 p.m.

Oakalla Fish Fry

The Oakalla Library has scheduled its annual Catfish Fry for Saturday, Sept. 14. The time is 5 to 8 p.m.

It will be held at the Oakalla Community Center which is located at 29011 FM 963, Oakalla 78608.

All-you-can eat: adults $20, those under 12, $10, with a family cap of $60. Included are fries, hushpuppies and a dessert.

Additional activities include a bake sale, drawing for a gun, and a silent auction.

All proceeds benefit the Oakalla Public Library.

Oakalla Library News Art Classes for the younger group of children will meet at 4:30 p.m. The older group’s activities will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Yoga Classes

Anyone wishing to participate in a Yoga Class can do so at the Oakalla Community Center. The time is 8:00 a.m. on Fridays. The classes are sponsored by the Oakalla Library. To join, bring a mat, a water bottle and a small donation for the instructor.
