The Lady Dawg volleyball program had a fantastic week that led to 10 program wins with just a single loss. The freshman team beat Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch on Tuesday and went 2-0 on the week with a victory over Llano on Friday. The JV Lady Dawgs also tallied a 2-0 mark with victories over Florence and Llano.
The varsity Lady Dawgs played seven games over the course of the week including their final tournament outing. Burnet finished 6-1 earning wins over Florence, a very good Llano team, La Vega twice, Academy JV, and Academy varsity. Their final victory on Saturday over Academy earned the Lady Dawgs a third place finish in the gold bracket at the Little River Bumblebee Classic. Burnet’s only loss of the week was to Salado in a three-set tournament battle.
“I am so proud of how our girls are competing and getting better each week,” said head volleyball coach Crystal Shipley.
In non-tournament play Burnet’s varsity beat Florence on Tuesday in straight-sets, 25-7, 25-7, 25-14. It was a dominate performance in every aspect of the game for Burnet.
Lauren Howton led with 15 kills, she was followed by Laney Huffman, 13; Cydney Robison, 10; Addison Huffman, four; Grace Cullison, two; Payton Smith, two; and Camryn Courtney, one.
Smith added up 26 assists and Courtney provided 19 others.
Smith was impressive at the service line with seven aces for quick points. Howton added three aces, Journey Denton scored two, and L. Huffman had one.
Digs were contributed by Denton with 24, L. Huffman, 13; Smith, eight; Peyton Allen, eight; Howton, eight; Courtney, five; Sarah Cullison, four; A. Huffman, four; and G. Cullison, one.
Robison had two blocks for Burnet.
The victory over Llano was Burnet’s most impressive match of the week. The Lady Dawgs swept a talented Llano bunch 25-23, 25-20, and 25-23.
“Our girls played the best 75 points they have played this season,” said Shipley following the Llano game.
Howton produced 16 kills versus Llano to lead the Lady Dawgs. She was followed by L. Huffman, four; Robison, four; G. Cullison, four; A. Huffman, three; Smith, three; and Courtney, three.
Assists were added by Smith, 17; Courtney, 10; Denton, five; Huffman, two; Howton, one; and Robison, one.
S. Cullison had four aces while Smith and Courtney each added another.
Denton led in the digs department with 18. She was followed by Smith, eight; Courtney, five; Howton, four; Robison, three; A. Huffman, three; S. Cullison, three; L. Huffman, two; and Allen, one.
Blocks were crucial in this match and G. Cullison led the way with three. She was followed by Robison, two; Howton, one; L. Huffman, one; and A. Huffman, one.
The impressive week led Burnet to a 12-9 overall record. They hosted Fredericksburg on Tuesday and played at Wimberley on Friday for regular season games.
The JV and freshman teams will play in tournament games at Wimberley’s TexFest on Thursday and Saturday.
