Inks Lake State Park welcomed over 140 adventurous souls to its annual midnight hike, celebrating the arrival of 2025 in style. Bundled up in layers and equipped with headlamps and flashlights, the group embarked on a one-mile journey to a scenic overhang by the lake.
The crisp, clear night offered breathtaking views of the starry sky with a shooting star making a magical appearance to delight the hikers. Guided by Ranger Jamie Langham and four dedicated volunteers, the group reached their destination at 11:52 p.m.
At the overhang, inspirational poetry set the tone for a reflective and joyous occasion. Conversations flowed among participants, with some attendees sharing information about local hiking groups. Ranger Jamie took the opportunity to highlight volunteer opportunities at Inks Lake State Park, including the upcoming all-inclusive day in April.
She shared an exciting update about the park’s goal to become an International Dark Sky Park. This prestigious designation, awarded by the International Dark-Sky Association, would not only enhance the park’s commitment to preserving dark skies but also promote sustainable tourism, reduce light pollution, and protect nocturnal wildlife habitats.
As 2024 drew to a close, the group joined in a unified countdown. At midnight, voices burst into a heartfelt rendition of “Auld Lang Syne,” echoing across the tranquil lake.
The hike concluded with participants retracing their steps, spirits lifted by the shared experience. The event was a resounding success, leaving attendees inspired and eager to return to the park’s trails and community events.
