Commissioners deadlock stalls new county judge pick

The Burnet County Commissioners Court went into executive session twice and conducted two roll calls in public.
Yet, they appointed no new county judge during its meeting Feb. 11 in the Burnet County Courthouse.

Three men are vying for the position, vacant since former county judge James Oakley resigned last month,

The applicants include retired 33rd District of Texas Judge Guilford “Gil” Jones, County Sheriff Chief Deputy Alan Trevino, and former state grant manager and probation officer Bryan Wilson.

Shortly before noon, after they emerged from their first closed-door executive session, Pct. 1 Commissioner Jim Luther Jr., Pct. 2 Commissioner Damon Beierle, Pct. 3 Commissioner Chad Collier and Pct. 4 Commissioner Joe Don Dockery offered their comments before a packed audience.

No matter who the commissioners selected, “One half of the folks will like it, the other half of folks will not like it,” Luther said. “There is no getting around that.”

“We have three really good men for a position we need to fill,” Beierle said. “All three would make a great choice. More prayer than you can imagine has gone into this decision for me.”

“It is a tough decision for sure,” Collier said. “The three men are impeccable in every way. No matter who is picked, the county is going to win.”

Based on feedback he has received, Pct. 4 Commissioner Joe Don Dockery said his constituents favored Jones.

Shortly after noon, after two executive sessions and two roll call votes, the choice for a new county judge boiled down to either Jones or Trevino.

After a double round of closed-door talks and two open roll calls, Beierle and Collier voted for Trevino, and Dockery and Luther voted for Jones.

No compromise was offered to change the stalemate.

Thus, the commissioners decided to call it a day.

“We are going to discuss this at a future meeting,” said Beierle, who chaired the meeting. “With that, I adjourn this meeting.”
