Successful first year for Burnet Soccer

BY WAYNE CRAIG/BURNET BULLETIN

For the first time in school history, Burnet fielded two soccer teams and both opened play with very successful seasons in 2016.

Because of it being a non-realignment year the Bulldog teams did not play district games and competed mostly against junior varsity squads.

Next season, the Bulldogs and Lady Dawgs will compete on the varsity level in Region IV, District 25-4A. That district will play host to nine schools including Burnet, Lampasas, Leander Glenn, Liberty Hill, Salado, Florence, Georgetown Gateway, Jarrell, and Little River Academy. The Georgetown Gateway school will only have a girls team competing so the boys district will feature only eight teams.

Both the Lady Dawgs and Bulldogs collected numerous wins throughout the 2016 season. Most recently the Lady Dawgs earned three wins scoring 14 points to their opponents one. Burnet defeated the Lampasas Lady Badgers, 5-0; Gateway Academy, 5-1; and Liberty Hill, 4-0 on March 7.

They played their final game of the season on Friday in Burnet versus Liberty Hill. We will update you on that contest next week.

Recently the boys team picked up a win over the Marble Falls JV B team, 2-0. They also beat Liberty Hill on the road Tuesday, March 8. The Dawgs came back from a 1-0 deficit to win, 2-1. Sergio Leon and Tyler Torres each scored a goal for Burnet. The Bulldogs also played their final game of the season Friday night against Liberty Hill.

The Lady Dawg team will lose one senior to graduation, their goalie, Aleacia Harris. The boys team will graduate a dozen players including Eduardo Huerta, Trevor Turner, Brandon Brown, Jordin Belmarez, Oscar Cardenas, Sergio Leon, Jose Ramirez, Slate Simpson, Romero Raya, Alex Perez, Mauricio Mejia, and Brock Foster.
