Elderly man found dead in house fire

A Sunday night house fire is responsible for the death of an elderly man outside Burnet.

Burnet County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a residential structure fire on Texas Highway 29, east of Burnet, at about 11:40 p.m. Sunday, April 17.

The initial call was received from a passing motorist.

When deputies responded along with fire department personnel and emergency medical responders, they found a single-story wood and masonry structure in the 6000 block of West Highway 29 on fire, with flames visible from the roof of the home.

After getting the fire under control, Burnet Fire Department officials discovered the body of an 80-year-old man inside the home. Justice of the Peace Peggy Simon pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The deceased was transported to the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The name of the deceased was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Chief Deputy Joey Canady said the State Fire Marshal's Office has been called in to investigate the origin and cause of the fire.
