BCISD Superintendent Newsletter

In just over three weeks, students will be returning to school for their first day on Tuesday, August 23. The staff and I have been asking ourselves where has the summer gone? We have been busy planning for the 2016-2017 school year which includes hiring new teachers, wrapping up the budget and getting the campuses cleaned and ready for students and teachers. You have probably noticed all of the construction and renovations taking place across the District. Construction teams are racing to complete work at Shady Grove Elementary, Bertram Elementary, Quest High School, Burnet Middle School and Burnet High School. Construction and renovations are never easy for a school district, but the end product is going to be well worth the inconveniences.  Our buildings will be safer, more comfortable and efficient because of all of the work being done this summer. To see pictures and read reports about the construction progress, please go to www.bcisdbond.com.

As a reminder, when we begin the new year, Quest High School will be located at 607 N. Vanderveer at the former Burnet Elementary site, and students in PK-2 that formally attended Burnet Elementary will be attending the newly renovated and expanded Shady Grove Elementary located at 111 Shady Grove Road.

To help us prepare for the new school year, we are asking parents to register all returning students. Shady Grove, RJ Richey, Bertram and Burnet Middle School will register on August 4 from 2-7 p.m. Quest High School will register on August 11 from 12- 4 p.m. and Burnet High School will register returning students on August 11 from 12-7 p.m. and on August 12 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. You should have received a letter in the mail that provides specific registration information along with the required forms that need to be completed. You can also find information on registration for returning students at www.burnetcisd.net.

The Board of Trustees has continued to meet during the summer. On August 15 at 6 p.m. the Board will hold a Budget and Tax Rate Hearing and then later that same evening the Board will consider approving the 2016-2017 budget during its Regular Meeting. One addition to the budget this next year, that the Board approved last week, is accident insurance for all students. Burnet CISD has historically provided basic and catastrophic accident insurance coverage for all students that participate in UIL activities. Beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, ALL students will be provided basic accident insurance at no cost to Burnet CISD families. The basic accident insurance covers expenses up to $25,000 per injury. This policy pays after all other valid coverages have been paid.

The Board and Administration believe this is a wise investment in students, and sends a strong message to families that the District cares about the well-being of all students while they are on campus. With over half of BCISD families being economically disadvantaged, this represents a small investment on the part of the District to protect families that cannot afford accident insurance coverage or the medical bills that result from an accident while on campus.

I am looking forward to welcoming back our staff on August 9 and celebrating the start of school on August 10 during our annual vendor expo, breakfast and convocation. Our theme for convocation this year is Back to Crafting the Future. In the movie, “Back to the Future”, Doc  Brown says, “The future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one.” I am looking forward to working together to make this school year a good one.
