Dawgs, Lady Dawgs soccer begins first-ever district journey

The BHS boys and girls soccer teams began district play this week marking the first time in school history that a Bulldog soccer team has competed in a district. Burnet is competing in District 25-4A which plays host to nine schools including Lampasas, Leander Glenn, Liberty Hill, Salado, Florence, Georgetown Gateway, Jarrell and Little River Academy. It is the biggest district in the state. The boys team is 1-1 in 25-4A after splitting their games last week. Burnet hosted Jarrell on Tuesday night and won 2-1. The Bulldogs goals were netted by Tyler Torres and Danny Lopez. They also saw district action on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium when they welcomed the Lampasas Badgers to town. It turned out to be a game that featured nine goals, but unfortunately the Dawgs ended up on the short side of a 6-3 match. Torres supplied the team with all three scores. The Bulldogs hosted Liberty Hill on Tuesday and will be back at home on Friday with a game against Salado. That game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m., following the Lady Dawgs’ home game. The Lady Dawgs are marching right along and currently have a 5-3-1 record, 1-0 in district play. In mid-January the girls in green won the Winter Classic with a 3-0-1 record with victories over Canyon Lake, Our Lady of the Hills, and Fredericksburg. The tie was with St. Mary’s. All tournament honors went to Lexey Parker for her work at goalie, and Summir Hill for excellent defensive play. Madelinne Deitrick was selected as the tournament MVP. On Jan. 19 the Lady Dawgs lost to Brownwood, 4-2. They bounced back nicely on Jan. 20 with a 4-1 win over Fredericksburg. In that contest Kinley Beyer scored three goals, Deitrick, one. Burnet’s girls had a non-district loss to the Boerne Lady Greyhounds, 2-0 before district began this week. The Lampasas Lady Badgers came to town on Friday to open 25-4A play and Burnet’s girls took care of business moving their district record to 1-0 with a 4-0 victory. Scoring was led by Beyer with two goals. Deitrick and Abby Bullock each netted one. “The Lady Dawgs posted a shut-out. At times it required a total team effort to keep the Lady Badgers out of the net,” said head coach Wes Strahan. The Burnet girls hosted Liberty Hill on Friday and will welcome Salado to town this Friday with first kick at 5:30 p.m.
