Eight errors in the course of their final game was simply too much for the Bulldog Baseball team to overcome last Friday night. Burnet, who hosted Liberty Hill for the season finale, built an 8-3 lead after two innings of play but flat-lined in the last three innings of the contest.
The Panthers scored 14 runs in the final three innings to storm back for the victory, 17-9.
The Bulldogs spotted the Hill three runs in the top of the first, but responded well in the bottom of the inning. The offense was kicked off by a Steven Gallardo single and a Reid Dalrymple walk putting two on for Burnet.
Koby Edwards followed that with a single that plated Gallardo and before the inning was done Dalrymple scored on a Panther error moving the Dawgs closer at 3-2.
After holding their opponent at bay in the top of the second the Dawgs went to work. Burnet loaded the bases with a Tyler Ford single, Coleman Posey walk after being hit by a pitch, and Gallardo walk. Dalrymple hit a two RBI single giving Burnet the lead at 4-2.
Gallardo soon crossed home plate on a wild pitch, and a Dylan King double plated Dalrymple. Rowdy Holmes reached base on a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch which brought Burnet’s run count to six in the second. At that point it was all Dawgs, 8-3.
The entire third and top of the fourth went by scoreless.
The Bulldogs increased their lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the fourth with a one RBI double by Ford that brought Holmes home.
Unfortunately that’s where the fun ended for Burnet.
Liberty Hill went on a scoring frenzy added four in the fifth, eight in the sixth, and two in the seventh, all while holding Burnet scoreless for the comeback 17-9 victory.
The loss ended the Bulldogs season with a mark of 9-16 overall, 5-7 in district play.
Burnet had 10 hits in the game. King and Ford produced doubles. Singles were added by Gallardo, two; Dalrymple, two; Edwards, one; and Ford, one.
Gallardo pitched just over five innings allowing eight hits and 13 runs, with three strikeouts and four walks.
The Bulldogs will graduate 10 members of this year’s team. Those athletes include Rowdy Holmes, Ryan Warwick, Coleman Posey, Koby Edwards, Dylan King, Steven Gallardo, Chance Jennings, Christian Tucker, Jacob Brown, and Tyler Ford.
