The varsity Bulldog 7 on 7 team participated in two state qualifying tournaments during the month of May but were unable to punch their ticket to state as of yet.
The Bulldogs hosted league play games on each Monday in May and will now participate in league play on Mondays in Georgetown through the end of June.
Burnet’s first SQT tournament was in Fredericksburg on May 20. The Bulldogs advanced to the semi-finals but could not qualify. Somerset and Sonora each earned a ticket in Fredericksburg.
On May 27 Burnet hosted a SQ tournament which included 16 quality teams competing in four brackets. Cameron and Lorena advanced from the Dawgs host tourney.
All hope is not lost. The Dawgs have been invited to participate in the Brownwood SQT on Saturday, June 23. That is the final weekend for qualification with the State Tournament slated for the next week on June 29-30 at college station.
So far in Class 4A Division II a total of 24 teams have qualified including Argyle, Brock, Cameron, Celina, China Spring, Deweyville, East Bernard, Falls City, Gatesville, Giddings, Graham, Midlothian, Kaufman, Lorena, Lexington, Liberty, Melissa, Needville, Somerset, Sonora, Stephenville, Sweeny, West, and Abilene Wylie.
In the past eight years the Bulldogs have only missed the state tournament two times.
In order to qualify for the state tournament teams must finish in the top two of a State Qualifying Tournament. Burnet would compete in the Division II bracket with play beginning on Thursday, June 29 and running through Friday, June 30.
The state tourney will be held at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex at 3101 Harvey Road, College Station. There is no spectators charge.
Division II pool play will begin at 1:00 p.m., and all teams will play in three games on Thursday. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the championship rounds on Friday morning, the bottom two teams will move on to the consolation bracket which will also start Friday morning.
The Division II State 7 on 7 Championship game is slated for 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
The Dawgs still have some work to do before their final chance to qualify on June 23 in Brownwood. If you would like to catch them in action you can do so each Monday for the rest of the month in Georgetown.
