Billy L. McCoy

March 16, 1936 — August 28, 2017

Billy L. McCoy was born March 16, 1936, to W.B. and Edna Ray McCoy on the family farm near Bertram. He died Aug. 28, 2017, in the hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law, and a niece. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bonnie, a son Ben and wife Melissa, a daughter Amy; also, brothers John and wife Patricia and Hugh, sister Mary Jo Marshall, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

After graduating from Bertram High School, Bill worked for local farmers, then PEC. He volunteered for the draft, and joined the Army, where he served in the Honor Guard in DC most of his time. Once discharged, he worked metal fabrication in Dallas, but was recalled by the Army, and spent time in Louisiana awaiting deployment. Upon his second discharge, he returned to Dallas to work. He married, earned 90 hours of college credit, moved back to Burnet, and was soon able to buy the family farm, where he lived and worked for 50 years.

Bill loved his Lord and his church, and he chose to serve and support the church throughout his life. He supported agricultural interests by being active in Farm Bureau, as well as the committees and programs sponsored by the county agricultural agent. He especially enjoyed pecan tree grafting and hosted grafting demonstrations two years. The Chamber of Commerce awarded him Farmer/Rancher of the Year twice. Some will remember him for the many hogs he raised.

Bill was an honorable, trustworthy man who loved his Lord, his family, and his fellow man. We will miss him immensely.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church, Burnet, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30. He will be buried at Shady Grove Cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet.
