Bluebonnets cluster around train rails as the Mighty Thomas Carnival is assembled beyond at the corner of Boundary and League Streets in Burnet.  The carnival is just one attraction in the four-day Burnet Bluebonnet Festival. Some celebrants will arrive by the Austin Steam Train Association's Bluebonnet Festival Flyer (www.austinsteamtrain.org).

The Texas state flower is putting on its show and all roads (and railroads) lead to Burnet this weekend for the 2018 Bluebonnet Festival.

Thursday-Sunday, April 13-15, marks Burnet's 35th annual celebration of that carpet of blue.

It all begins Thursday with the Mighty Thomas Carnival opening, 5-10 p.m., at the corner of Boundary and League Streets.

The carnival has traditional features for every age, with Family Night on Thursday, a local favorite. It will be open also on Friday, 5-11 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m., and Sunday noon-5 p.m.

Wrist bands for unlimited rices can be purchased ahead of time at the Burnet Chamber of Commerce and at the carnival. Single tickets can be purchased for $1 per ticket, or $25 for 30 tickets. Rides are 3-5 tickets and all riders must have tickets.

Friday

Kiwanis will serve up its All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast from 6 a.m.-1 p.m. at Valley Lodge #175, 311 South Main Street, to kick off Friday's events. Although the official opening ceremonies take place on the main stage on the courthouse square at 5:30 p.m., plenty goes on beforehand, including arts and crafts vendors and the 5 p.m. carnival opening.

Sign up for the Burnet Bulletin Pet Parade will be sponsored by RE/Max Burnet, also at 5 p.m., in front of the Herman Brown Free Library. The parade takes place at 6 p.m. after the flyover by the Commemorative Air Force Highland Lakes Squadron.

The 2002 Grammy Award-winning musician Bobby Flores and his Yellow Rose Band will play for the live music kick off on the square, 7:30-10 p.m. Friday.

Saturday

Saturday's Burnet Bluebonnet Fun Run for runners, joggers and walkers includes a 10k, a 5k and Kids K, with registration 6:30-7:30 a.m. on the square. Early registration is encouraged to avoid the rush and forms are available online, www.bluebonnetfestival.org/events/5k-10k-run/, at the YMCA of the Highland Lakes, 1601 South Water Street and the Burnet Chamber of Commerce, 101 North Pierce Street.

The Austin Steam Train Association makes its Bluebonnet Festival Flyer trip to the historic Burnet depot on Saturday and Sunday, and visitors from the Austin area take the quick walk from the train station to the carnival, vendors, and music. Arrival of the steam engine at the historic depot is a treat at 10 a.m. Saturday and about 11 a.m. Sunday.

All day activities and vendors are attractions on the square. The Biergarten on Jackson Street will be open 10 a.m.-8 p.m.

The Highland Lakes Birding & Wildflower Show goes on at the library from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The Lakes Area Rod & Classic Car Display will be at Hamilton Creek Park from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Children's activities of all kinds will be centered on the north side of the downtown square beginning at 9:30 a.m. and including the Bluebonnet Bicycle Decorating Contest at 10 a.m.

The Bluebonnet Grand Parade departs the square at 11 a.m., and the Horse Cavalry Detachment of the Fort Hood U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division will perform at Wallace Riddell Park immediately following the parade.

The Rubber Ducky Race at 12:30 p.m. in Hamilton Creek Park is always a crowd pleaser and all proceeds benefit Literacy Highland Lakes.

Saturday live music events will include: Ben Watson & the Hired Guns, 12:30 p.m. on the main stage on the square; Brittany Nemec on the Jackson Street stage and Clickety Cloggers Dance Club on the main stage, 1:30 p.m.; Big Anton & the Alley Cats on the main stage, 2:15 p.m.; Shane Schilling on the Jackson Street stage, 3 p.m.; Andrew Ham on the main stage 4 p.m.; Allen Ray at Jackson Street, 4:30 p.m.; Texas Crossing on the main stage 7:45 p.m.; Kody West on the main stage 8:30 p.m. and Radney Foster on the main stage 10:15 p.m.

The Jackson Street Biergarten will be open noon-3 p.m. and Allen Ray is set for the final live music performance on Jackson Street noon-3 p.m.
