The Burnet powerlifting team competed at their host meet last Thursday and just about everyone who grabbed a bar set a new personal record.

There is still a lot to learn for some newbies; like hitting depth, waiting on commands, and learning lift patterns but all-in-all it was a pretty successful meet for our local lifters.

There were some pretty incredible feats accomplished by those in Bulldog green.

Roger Craig, 242 pound lifter, set the bar high right out of the gate with a 600 pound squat on his final lift. That was only 20 pounds shy of the school record set by Jesus Palacios in 2008.

Craig ended the night with the best heavy platform squat, 600 pounds; best bench press, 395; and collected the triple crown with the best deadlift as well, 565, for a 1,565 total. At the end of the night, for the second week in a row, he earned the best overall lifter of the meet award.

Ryan Jackson was another high level competitor for Burnet in his 148 class. Jackson turned in the best light platform bench press of the night with a personal record 275 pound press. He also had the second best squat of all light lifters with an impressive PR of 450 pounds, and he dead lifted 375. Jackson claimed a silver medal for his efforts with a 1,095 total.

The Burnet boys are increasing their totals by leaps and bounds.

Jaxson Denton had a fantastic showing in the 165 class and sewed up a gold medal finish with an outstanding 425 deadlift to end the meet with a 1,085 total.

Zac Hudgins is another beast suiting up in Burnet green. Hudgins, a 275 class lifter, got off to an excellent start with a 575 pound squat; he finished with a 1,440 total to claim a silver medal.

Jared Tippie powered up a 555 pound squat in the SHW class, he collected bronze for his efforts.

Burnet’s 181 lifter, Grishma Pun, also collected some bronze with a third place finish 1,120 total.

148 pound lifter, Caleb Roberts, collected a fifth place medal, and helped the Bulldogs finish second overall as a team with an 810 total.

There were some nice finishes by the Lady Dawg lifters too.

Mikayla Whitus had one of the most impressive lifts of the day with a 180 pound bench press in the 165 girls’ class. M. Whitus claimed third in her class with an almost 700 pound total.

Hailey Tindell was the top points earner for the Lady Dawg powerlifting team. Tindell finished second in the 148’s collecting her second silver medal in as many weeks.

The Lady Dawgs finished sixth overall as a team.

Other Lady Bulldog lifters for Burnet included Kirstyn Reyes, Sidney Reyes, Rylea Whitus, Daniella Torres, Abigail Pierce, Teagan Tappe, Lluvia Loredo, and Veronica Ordaz.

The Burnet powerlifting team will take the week off before competing in the Lago Vista Invitational in a few weeks.
