BCISD campuses to close Friday, Mar. 1

A message from BCISD Superintendent Keith McBurnett:

Dear Parents,

As you have probably heard, the Lady Dawgs have qualified as one of the final four teams to make it to the UIL State Basketball Tournament in San Antonio. This is the first time in the District’s history to have any basketball team make it to the State Tournament. The Lady Dawgs will take on Hardin-Jefferson on Friday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.

Ever since the win over Liberty Hill this past Saturday, the District has received a large number of inquiries from staff and parents asking about the District’s plan to accommodate the State Semi-Final game on Friday.

As with any state-level competition, for planning purposes we poll our staff and we attempt to gauge the interest of staff and students in attending the event. The interest among staff and students to attend the game on Friday has been significant. Based on the interest that has been expressed already, the District is projecting much lower student attendance on Friday than a typical day. Because schools are funded based on average daily attendance, lower attendance would result in a loss of school funding on Friday. In addition, because of already scheduled extracurricular events on Friday, and the large number of staff members that have expressed an interest in attending the State Semi Final Game, the District will not have enough substitutes to address the demand.

For the reasons outlined above, the District has made the decision to cancel school on Friday, March 1. Based on the number of minutes that students will attend school this year, students will NOT have to make up the Friday, March 1 missed day and the District will not lose state funding for that day.

For those students that participate in an extracurricular activity, coaches and sponsors will be sending out separate communication about any events scheduled for Friday. Some events will be rescheduled or canceled, while other events will continue as scheduled.

I apologize ahead of time for any inconvenience this decision may cause some parents, and for the short notice of the announcement. The District did not know its opponent or game time until late Saturday, and we have been meeting since Sunday discussing all possible options.

We wish the Lady Dawgs the best of luck on this historic trip to the UIL State Basketball Tournament!
